Everyone wants access to affordable health care. In 1990 two Nimbin women, Diana Roberts and Pauline McCabe, practising naturopaths for over ten years, realised it would be desirable to offer the community of Nimbin a cheaper form of traditional health care than was generally available. It was decided that an old-style herbal and homeopathic dispensary was the best way to provide an affordable service and the Nimbin Apothecary was opened (apothecary traditionally meaning the chemist or pharmacist). An over-the-counter dispensary allows people who feel unwell or have health concerns to just drop in. If assistance can be provided there and then it will be. If the person needs to consult at length they will be referred to a recommended practitioner. This may be a herbalist, homeopath, masseur, osteopath, acupuncturist or doctor.
We were pioneers of this concept and by 1997 our premises had tripled in size and our business had grown to involve four women with a client base of over two thousand people. Subsequently others in the region have opened similar services. Today the Apothecary is owned by Diana Roberts, Colleen Hadley and Tarang Bates who very much enjoy working together. The Nimbin Apothecary offers professional, friendly, over-the-counter naturopathic health care whilst providing herbal extracts, homeopathic, dietary supplements, creams and ointments at affordable prices. Upon request we make up mixtures for simple ailments, prescribe appropriate supplements and give health care advice. We are also becoming well-known for our range of cosmetics and other body products, some of which we send to customers all over Australia. In more recent years our extensive range of essential oils have become very popular. We also sell crystals and make our own jewellery and sun catchers.
A major part of our role is educational, helping people to regain knowledge of natural healing so they understand and can treat simple health problems at home. This ultimately means more self-responsibility, less reliance on drugs, reduced costs to the community, greater awareness of ourselves as a part of nature, healthier people and a healthier planet.
